 Vijay Diwas is a significant day in India that commemorates the victory of Indian Armed Forces in The kargil war was fought between May and July 1999 in the kargil district of Jammu and kashmir. Indian military launched "Operation Vijay" to recapture these territories. 


Key Points about the Kargil war:

1.Cause of the conflict: The conflict arose when Pakistani troops, disguised as militants, infiltrated into Indian territory the Pakistan's attempt to take advantages of the difficult terrain in the kargil sector to infiltrate it's forces and seize control of strategic heights along the LoC. The goal was to cut off the highway connected Srinagar and Leh, which could have given Pakistan a significant advantage in the region. 

2.Covert InfiltrationThe intrusion by Pakistani forces and militants was carried out without the knowledge of the Pakistani government or its prime minister Nawaz Sharif. The operation was planned and executed by the Pakistani military, particularly the Inter-Service Intelligence(ISI), without the knowledge or consent of civilian government.

3.Indian Response: Once the infiltration was discovered, the Indian Armed Forces launched a large-scale military operation called "Operation Vijay" to push back the intruders and reclaim the occupied territories. The operation involved intense grounds battles, artillery exchanges, and airstrikes.

4.Diplomatic Efforts: During the conflict, India sought to highlight Pakistan's aggression and gain international support for its position. India made efforts to inform the international community about the covert nature of Pakistani operation and the violation of the line of control.

5.US Intervention: The United States played a crucial role in mediating a resolution to the conflict. President Bill Clinton Pressured the Pakistani Prime Minister, Nawaz Sharif, to withdraw Pakistani troops from kargil region. Sharif ultimately agreed to withdraw, and the conflict de-escalated.

6.Ceasefire and Aftermath: In July 1999, Pakistan withdrew its forces from the kargil region, and the conflict officially ended. The war resulted in a significant loss of life on both sides and further strained the relations between India and Pakistan.

7.Shimla Agreement: After the war, both countries reaffirmed their commitment to the Shimla Agreement of 1972, which emphasized resolving all disputes between India and Pakistan through peaceful bilateral negotiations.

Kargil War ended on July 26 1999, this war had a lasting impact on the relations between India and Pakistan, the Kashmir issue remains a major point of contention between the two nations.
